School Tool Box is Back for a Limited Time! The School Tool Box website is live at
http://www.stbstore.com/carson18.aspx!
As a
reminder, Mr. Chep’s May 27th letter (attached) explained that MCPS has created
new guidelines regarding course related fees and student supplies that caused
this delay. We apologize for the short notice and time frame for participating,
but these circumstances were beyond our control.
This year, we are only
able to offer School Tool Boxes for purchase online at
http://www.stbstore.com/carson18.aspx.
Orders can be
placed through midnight on Friday July 10th, after which the site will be
shut down and you will have to purchase your child’s supplies on your own.
Per the new MCPS guidelines, each grade has two supply lists (see
attachments). The first list per grade is the “teacher’s recommended supplies”
for each child’s individual use. The second list includes “suggested shared
classroom donations.”
Together, these two options make up what was equal to
last year’s entire School Tool Box. When you go online, if you wish to
purchase the individual toolbox and the requested shared classroom supplies, you
will need to add both items to your cart for each child attending RCES. Remember
to complete it for the grade your child will be in for Fall 2009.
These
lists are as complete as possible in matching the school supply lists, with very
few exceptions … slightly used tennis balls for chairs, 3oz. Dixie cups, and
plastic knives (if you can provide them, these shared items will need to be sent
in separately with your child). There is also an option for ordering
backpacks. One final note … the website does not have the ability to show you
the contents for each box being ordered. We have therefore attached and named
the respective personal and shared lists for your review.
All supplies
will be delivered to your child’s classroom. If you have any questions, please
feel free to contact Monica Parsons at
mayohai@aol.com.
We recognize the
economy has placed a strain on many of our families. If the costs or the online
ordering process creates a hardship in any way for your family, please contact
Mr. Chep at school to discuss the ways in which the PTA can support you from our
scholarship funding. Your information will remain confidential with Mr.
Chep.
Finally, we are also soliciting families to sponsor students who
may need financial support in purchasing supplies. On the school tool box
website, the first box you will see is for making a contribution to students in
need of financial assistance purchasing school supplies. Thank you for
considering this request, as we anticipate a growing need for additional
financial support due to the ongoing challenges of our economy.
Thank
you for your understanding and participation.

Original Works Art Program is Back!
Once again, RCES has teamed up with Original Works -- the #1 art-based program in the country -- to offer a special program that allows you to have your child's very own artwork reproduced onto a selection of 20+ quality products. These products range from magnets, mugs, and mouse pads to t-shirts, tote bags and more.
Your child will be creating their artwork in school. Kindergarten and First Grade are currently working on either birthday cakes or lovey toys. Second and Third Grades are doing family portraits; Fourth Grade is creating "What I Love" and Fifth Grade artwork will be about Future Career.
We are thrilled to be participating in this unique and innovative program which is also a school fundraiser, as RCES gets a significant portion of the sales proceeds. Look for complete program, product and pricing information to go home with your child in April.
For more information or if you have any questions, please contact Parent Coordinator Denise Burcksen at dburcksen@comcast.net or 301-963-4518.
Volunteers Needed
An Hour Can Make A Difference!
Community volunteers are needed for the Ruth Rales-Comcast Kids Reading Network Program. Rachel Carson E.S. is one of 70 MCPS elementary schools that offers this scientifically, research-based Reading Together program. This one-on-one tutorial provides extra reading support to improve second graders’ vocabulary, reading fluency and comprehension.
The weekly, one-hour, tutoring sessions are on Wednesday and Thursday from 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM. The sessions will end in early May.
Volunteers must commit to one hour each week, either on Wednesday or Thursday, through the end of the session. Volunteers do not have to have children at RCES or attending MCPS.
Training and ongoing support, plus tutoring materials and books will be provided. For more information about the program, please visit the website: http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/readingnetwork.
To find out how to volunteer, please contact the School Coordinator: Kimberly McIntyre by e-mail: Kimberly_R_McIntyre@mcpsmd.org
New Staff Coffee Pot!
Yes, it's a Keurig. The PTA has pulled all the stops! Stop by the faculty lounge and check it out. Bring a pod and brew yourself a cup. Bring an extra pod to share with our fine teachers.

Even though the Donut Party Contest has ended, you can still register your Giant card and earn money for our school!! Last year 135 registered families earned $3,800 for RCES. You must re-register each year to receive credit.
